Mahatma Gandhi Central University (MGCU), established by the Central Universities (Amendment) Act of 2014, began functioning on February 3, 2016, in Motihari, Bihar. This emerging public university offers a range of undergraduate, postgraduate, and Ph.D. programs across seven schools and 20 departments, attracting students from across India. Named after Mahatma Gandhi, MGCU is dedicated to promoting values of truth, non-violence, and service to humanity. Under the dynamic leadership of Vice-Chancellor Prof. Sanjeev Kumar Sharma, MGCU fosters holistic development in education, research, and innovation within a supportive environment.
Admission/Eligibility Criteria
– Basis of Admission : Admission to the Ph.D. program at MGCU will be based on UGC-NET scores per UGC guideline
– Category 1 : Eligible for Ph.D. admission with JRF and Assistant Professor appointment.
– Category 2 : Eligible for Ph.D. admission without JRF and Assistant Professor appointment.
– Category 3 : Eligible for Ph.D. admission only (not eligible for JRF or Assistant Professor).
– Additional Eligibility :
– Candidates with valid JRF status prior to 2024 may apply.
– Candidates qualifying UGC-NET/UGC-CSIR in 2024 or other national-level tests are eligible under Categories 2 and 3.
– NET qualifiers prior to 2024 (without JRF) are not eligible.
– Relaxations : A 5% relaxation in marks or equivalent grade is available for SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/Differently-Abled, EWS, and other UGC-designated categories.

Selection Process
– Weightage : Admission is based on 70% NET test scores and 30% interview performance.
